How to use the Easy Grader

  1. Type the number of questions on the test, or use − and +.
  2. For each test, press Mark one wrong (or the W key) once per wrong answer.
  3. Write down the score and letter grade, then press Save & next (R) and pick up the next paper.

Every saved paper goes into This grading session under the grader: the class average, highest and lowest score, how many students got each letter, and a list you can copy straight into your gradebook. Your settings and the session are remembered on this device only.

How the score is calculated

Score = (questions − wrong) ÷ questions × 100. With 20 questions and 3 wrong, the student has 17 right, and 17 ÷ 20 = 85% — a B on the standard scale.

The letter grade follows the score as it is shown. With no decimals, 89.5% shows as 90% and earns an A; switch to one or two decimals under Settings if your school does not round.

Half points and custom scales

Turn on Allow half points under Settings to take off half a point for a partly right answer — the H key adds ½ wrong and the chart lists every half step. If your school uses its own scale, choose Custom and type it as letters and minimum percents, for example “A 94, B 85, C 75, D 65, F 0”.

Frequently asked questions

What is an easy grader?

An easy grader (also called an EZ Grader) is a chart that shows the score for every possible number of wrong answers on a test. Teachers use it to grade a stack of tests quickly: count the wrong answers, look up the score. This tool does the same in your browser and also gives the letter grade.

How do I calculate a test score from the number wrong?

Subtract the number wrong from the number of questions, divide by the number of questions, and multiply by 100. For example, 3 wrong out of 20 is (20 − 3) ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%.

Can I give half points?

Yes. Open Settings and turn on “Allow half points”. The number wrong then moves in steps of ½, the H key adds half a point, and the chart lists every half step.

What letter grade is 85%?

On the standard US scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60) 85% is a B. On a plus/minus scale it is a B (83–86). You can also type your school’s own scale under Settings.

Is the letter grade based on the rounded score?

Yes. The letter follows the score as shown, so with 0 decimals an 89.5% shows as 90% and earns the A. Choose 1 or 2 decimals in Settings if your school does not round.

Can I print the grading chart?

Yes. Set the number of questions and press “Print chart”. Only the chart is printed, so you can keep it next to the tests while you grade.

Can it work out the class average?

Yes. Press “Save & next” after each paper and the grader keeps a running list with the class average, the highest and lowest score and how many students got each letter. “Copy scores” copies the list so you can paste it into a spreadsheet or gradebook.

Are my students’ scores sent anywhere?

No. The grader runs entirely in your browser. The scores you save stay on this device until you clear them, and no names are ever asked for.
