The semester grade formula

Semester = Q1 × w + Q2 × w + exam × (100% − 2w)

With the common 40 / 40 / 20 split, each quarter counts twice as much as the exam — so a weak exam hurts less than a weak quarter. With 37.5 / 37.5 / 25 the exam matters more.

Frequently asked questions

How is a semester grade calculated?

Most high schools weight the two quarter (nine-week) grades and the semester exam. A common split is 40% for each quarter and 20% for the exam: 88, 82 and a 75 on the exam give 0.4 × 88 + 0.4 × 82 + 0.2 × 75 = 83.

What does my school use?

Many Florida districts, including Broward, Palm Beach and Hillsborough, have used 40 / 40 / 20 for high school semester grades, but policies change and differ between schools and courses. Check your student handbook or ask your teacher, then pick or type the weighting here.

What do I need on my semester exam?

Leave the exam blank. The calculator shows the exam score you need for an A, B, C and D, based on your two quarter grades and the exam’s weight.

Are semester grades rounded?

Usually to the nearest whole percent, so an 89.5 becomes a 90 and an A. The exam scores needed for each letter here assume that rounding; if your school does not round, aim half a point higher.

What if there is no semester exam?

Choose “50 / 50, no exam”: the semester grade is then the plain average of the two quarters.
