How to use the GPA calculator

    1. For each class, choose the letter grade you got (or expect).
    2. Enter its credits — 1 for a full-year high school class, or the credit hours for a college course.
    3. Set the level: Regular, Honors, or AP / IB / College.

Your unweighted GPA and weighted GPA update after every change. Name a class if it helps you keep track; rows without a grade are left out.

    How GPA is calculated

    GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits. Grade points come from the 4.0 scale in the table on this page. A 4-credit A and a 3-credit B give (4.0 × 4 + 3.0 × 3) ÷ 7 = 3.57.

The weighted GPA uses the same formula after adding the level bonus to each passing grade: an A in an AP class counts as 5.0 and a B in an Honors class as 3.5.

    Semester, cumulative or target GPA?

This page works out the GPA of one list of classes — a semester or a school year. To combine it with the GPA you already have, use the cumulative GPA calculator. To see what you need from here on to hit a goal, try the GPA raise calculator, and to turn a percentage grade into GPA points, see percentage to GPA.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

    Turn each grade into points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on), multiply by the course’s credits, add everything up and divide by the total credits. Three 1-credit classes with an A, a B+ and a B give (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0) ÷ 3 = 3.43.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every class. A weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes — usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB and dual-enrollment college courses — so it can go above 4.0, up to 5.0.

Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?

Both. Many colleges recalculate an unweighted GPA from your transcript so they can compare schools fairly, and then look at how many Honors and AP courses you took. That is why this calculator shows both numbers.

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?

On most high school and college scales an A+ is worth 4.0, the same as an A. A few schools give 4.3; if yours does, your GPA will be a little higher than shown here.

Does an F get the AP or Honors bonus?

No. A failed class counts as 0 points on both the weighted and the unweighted GPA — the level bonus is only added to passing grades.

How many credits is a class?

In high school a full-year class is usually 1 credit and a semester class 0.5. In college, use the credit hours on your schedule — most classes are 3 or 4. If all your classes count the same, leave every row at 1.

    Are my grades saved?

Only on this device. Your course list is kept in your browser so it is still there next time, and nothing is sent to a server.
