How percent converts to GPA

Grades on the 4.0 scale go in steps: every letter covers a range of percentages and is worth a fixed number of points. An A (93–96%) is 4.0, an A− (90–92%) is 3.7, a B+ (87–89%) is 3.3 and each step down is worth 0.3 or 0.4 less, to an F (below 60%) at 0.

Because of the steps, a 93% and a 96% earn the same 4.0, while 92.9% earns 3.7. If your teacher rounds your grade, round it the same way before converting.

How do I convert a percentage to a GPA?

Find the letter grade for your percentage, then the grade points for that letter. On the common plus/minus scale 93–96% is an A (4.0), 90–92% an A− (3.7), 87–89% a B+ (3.3), 83–86% a B (3.0) and so on down to below 60%, an F (0.0).

What GPA is an 85%?

An 85% is a B, which is 3.0 on the 4.0 scale — 3.5 in an Honors class and 4.0 in an AP or IB class on a weighted scale.

What GPA is a 90%?

A 90% is an A− on a plus/minus scale, worth 3.7. Schools without minus grades count 90% as an A, worth 4.0.

Can I average my percentages and convert that?

It gives a rough idea, but a real GPA converts each class to grade points first and then averages the points. Two classes at 89% and 91% average 90% (3.7), but their GPA is (3.3 + 3.7) ÷ 2 = 3.5.

Does every school use this scale?

No. This is the most common US high school and college scale, but some schools start an A at 90% or 94%, or give 4.3 for an A+. Check your school’s handbook if you need an exact match.
