Free overall GPA calculator

Cumulative GPA Calculator

List your semesters with their GPA and credits — or your GPA so far plus this term — and get your overall GPA, weighted by credits the way schools do it.

Your semesters

Or one row for your GPA so far, one for this term.

How to use the cumulative GPA calculator

    1. Enter each semester’s GPA and the number of credits it covered.
    2. Add a row for every semester, or put your current cumulative GPA in one row and the new term in the next.
    3. Read your cumulative GPA; the bars show how each semester compares.

    The cumulative GPA formula

Cumulative GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits, where each semester’s grade points are its GPA × its credits. Because it is weighted by credits, a heavy semester moves your GPA more than a light one — and the more credits you have behind you, the less a single semester can change it.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Multiply each semester’s GPA by its credits to get its grade points, add the grade points of all semesters, and divide by the total credits. A 3.2 over 60 credits and a 4.0 over 15 credits give (3.2 × 60 + 4.0 × 15) ÷ 75 = 3.36.

Why can’t I just average my semester GPAs?

Because semesters rarely have the same number of credits. A plain average gives a 12-credit semester the same weight as an 18-credit one; the cumulative GPA weights each semester by its credits, which is how schools calculate it.

How do I calculate my GPA with my current GPA?

Put your current cumulative GPA and the credits it covers in the first row, and this semester’s GPA and credits in the second. The result is your new cumulative GPA.

Does it work for weighted GPA?

Yes, as long as every row uses the same kind of GPA. Enter weighted GPAs in every row to get a weighted cumulative GPA, or unweighted in every row for an unweighted one — mixing the two gives a number that means neither.

What credits should I use in high school?

Use the credits on your report card — usually 1 per full-year class, so a semester of six classes is about 3 credits. If you don’t know them and every semester had the same classes, give each semester the same number; the result will be the plain average.

    Is my GPA stored anywhere?

Only in your own browser, so your semesters are still there when you come back. Nothing is uploaded.
