How to use the final grade calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the class, before the final.
  2. Enter how much the final is worth — your syllabus says, often 15–30%.

The sheet shows the score you need on the final and the score needed for each letter grade. The table under it shows the grade you end up with for any score, so you know what’s safe and what’s at stake.

The final exam formula

Your course grade after the final is current grade × (1 − w) + final score × w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. Solving for the final score gives needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w.

The bigger the final’s weight, the more it can move your grade: with a 20% final, every 10 points on the final changes your course grade by 2 points; with a 40% final, by 4.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Needed score = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a decimal. With an 85% now, a final worth 20% and a 90% goal: (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110% — so an A is out of reach, but a B needs only 60%.

What if my final is worth points, not a percent?

Divide the final’s points by the total points in the class. A 200-point final in a 1,000-point class is worth 20%. Enter that as the weight.

What does it mean if I need more than 100%?

That the grade you want can’t be reached with the final alone — even a perfect score leaves you short. Look at the next letter down, or ask whether there is extra credit.

What grade will I get if I fail the final?

Check the what-if table: it shows your course grade for final scores from 100% down to 0%. With an 85% and a 20% final, scoring 50% still leaves you with a 78%.

Which current grade should I use?

The grade in the class before the final, as shown in your gradebook or student portal. If your teacher weights categories (homework, tests…), use the overall percentage, or work it out with the grade calculator first.

Does this work for college finals?

Yes. The math is the same for high school and college courses — only the weight of the final changes, and your syllabus says what it is.
