GPA Raise Calculator

Enter your current GPA, the credits behind it and the GPA you’re aiming for. See the average you need from here, how many credits of straight A’s it takes, and where each future GPA would leave you.

High school: a full-year class is usually 1 credit. College: use credit hours (a semester is about 15).

What-if table

Your new GPA if you average this GPA over the next … credits. Green meets your target.

How to use the GPA raise calculator

  1. Enter your current cumulative GPA and the credits it covers.
  2. Enter the GPA you want to reach — for a scholarship, honors or a college application.
  3. Enter the credits you still have to take, or pick one semester, one year or two years.

The sheet shows the average GPA you need on those credits and how many credits it would take with straight A’s. The what-if table shows your new GPA for other results, so you can set a realistic goal.

The formula

Needed GPA = (target × (credits so far + credits to come) − current GPA × credits so far) ÷ credits to come. If the answer is above 4.0 the target can’t be reached in that time; if it is 0 or less you will stay above the target whatever happens.

Frequently asked questions

How do I figure out what GPA I need to raise my GPA?

Multiply your target GPA by the total credits you will have, subtract the grade points you already have (current GPA × credits so far), and divide by the credits still to come. With a 3.0 over 60 credits and a 3.3 target over 30 more credits: (3.3 × 90 − 3.0 × 60) ÷ 30 = 3.9.

How fast can I raise my GPA?

It depends on how many credits you already have. Early on a single good semester moves your GPA a lot; with 90 credits behind you, even straight A’s raise it slowly. The what-if table shows exactly how far each future GPA takes you.

Can I raise my GPA from 2.5 to 3.0 in one semester?

Only if you have few credits so far. With 30 credits at 2.5 you would need a 4.0 over 15 credits to reach 3.0; with 60 credits it would take 30 credits of straight A’s. Enter your own numbers above to check.

Can I reach a 4.0 if my GPA is below 4.0?

No — once any grade below an A is on your record, an unweighted 4.0 is out of reach, because it would need grades above 4.0. You can get closer to it with every A, which the calculator shows.

Does retaking a class raise my GPA?

At many schools a retake replaces the old grade, which can raise your GPA more than a new class. Policies differ, so check yours; to model a replacement, lower your credits so far by the retaken class and adjust your current GPA.
